Let’s LearnHungarian

About this site

Let's Learn Hungarian is an introduction to the language for complete beginners through to intermediate learners. It covers the sound system in one page, then a structured course organised around the CEFR framework — 3 levels (A1, A2, B1), 16 units, 74 lessons, 1305 words and phrases in all. The alphabet and the first three lessons are free; a subscription unlocks every lesson, the word list, and the practice tools — flashcards, quizzes, speaking practice, and spaced review. Every lesson opens with what you will be able to do, teaches a small set of words, adds a few grammar notes, and ends with practice.

How the pronunciation works

Every Hungarian entry has two aids. The first is a written respelling, like KUR-sur-nurm, where hyphens split syllables and capitals mark the stressed one (in Hungarian, always the first). The key to it lives on the alphabet page.

The second is a play button. Each word has a pre-generated audio clip, so it sounds the same in every browser. The clips are made by text-to-speech, not recorded by a native speaker, so they are an approximation — treat the written guide, and a real teacher, as the reliable references. If a clip is ever missing, playback falls back to your browser's own voice.

Sources

The alphabet, IPA values, and pronunciation rules follow Wikipedia's Hungarian alphabet and Help:IPA/Hungarian articles. The vocabulary and phrases are standard, everyday Hungarian cross-checked against widely used learner references. The English given is the natural equivalent; a separate “literally” line shows the word-for-word version where it helps explain the grammar.

Limits

This is a study aid, not certified instruction and not a teacher. It covers standard, everyday Budapest-area Hungarian up through the B1 (intermediate) level of the CEFR scale — it does not go into advanced literary or highly technical registers, regional dialects, or serve as a comprehensive dictionary. The content is compiled with the help of automated tools and has not been reviewed by a certified linguist, so it is deliberately simple and may contain errors. Do not rely on it where a mistake would matter; see the disclaimer.

Contact and corrections

Found a mistake, or have a question? Use the contact form. Corrections are genuinely welcome — accuracy matters more here than adding more words. The legal pages cover terms, privacy, and the full disclaimer.
