Privacy Policy

The short version
You can use the free lessons and the alphabet without an account. Used that way, Let's Learn Hungarian sets no advertising or tracking cookies, and your progress lives in your browser. The site does use Vercel Web Analytics for aggregate visit counts — it does not use cookies, does not track you across sites, and cannot identify you individually. See Cookies below.
If you create an account, we store your email address and your learning progress so it follows you across devices. That is the only reason accounts exist.
Using the site without an account
- Your browser's local storage. Which lessons you have marked done and the last one you opened are kept in your own browser. This never leaves your device and you can clear it in your browser settings.
- Hosting logs. The site is served by a hosting provider that, like all web hosts, may briefly log standard request data (IP address, user agent, page requested) to run and protect the service. Michael Soucek does not use these logs to build profiles of visitors.
- Fonts and audio. Fonts are self-hosted with the site and pronunciation clips are static files from the same host — nothing is fetched from a third party at page load.
If you create an account
We store, and process to run the account:
- Your email address, and either a securely hashed password or, if you sign in with Google, the basic profile Google returns (name, email, account id). We do not receive your Google password.
- Your learning data: which lessons you have completed, the last lesson you opened, and the calendar dates you were active (for the streak counter).
- An optional display name if you set one.
- Your email preference — whether you asked us to send occasional new-lesson notes and study tips.
The legal basis is performance of the account you asked us to create (and your consent for the optional marketing email). We do not sell this data, and we do not use it for advertising or profiling.
If you use the Citizenship Guide's interview-prep personalization
The interview-prep lessons under the Citizenship Guide let you personalize example sentences with your own facts. Every field is optional and defaults to a generic example if you leave it blank. If you fill any of it in, it is kept on your device; if you are signed in, it also syncs to your account so it follows you across devices, the same way your lesson progress does.
This can include:
- About you: your name, birth year, current city and the year you moved there, street address, zip/postal code, phone number, marital status, citizenship, profession, field of study, a hobby, and whether and when you have visited Hungary.
- Your family: your spouse’s and children’s names, birth years, and professions, if you add them.
- Your ancestor chain: for each generation you add — name, hometown, birth year, the year and reason they emigrated, the country they emigrated to, and profession.
We store this only to personalize the lessons you see; we do not use it for advertising or profiling, and we do not share it with anyone except the processors listed below. You can clear it at any time by leaving the fields blank and saving, or by deleting your account.
Who processes your data
- Supabase provides the authentication and the database that hold your account, learning, and interview-prep personalization data, as a processor acting on Michael Soucek's instructions.
- Resend sends the account emails (sign-in links, address confirmation, password resets, and marketing email if you opted in).
- Stripe processes payment for subscriptions and the Citizenship Guide purchase, and holds the billing information (such as your name, email, and card details) needed to do so. Michael Soucek does not see or store your full card details; see Stripe's privacy policy.
- The hosting provider serves the site and processes standard request logs, and provides the cookieless Web Analytics described under Cookies below.
Each of these is bound by its own data-processing terms. Data may be processed on servers outside your country; where that happens it is covered by the safeguards in those terms.
Cookies
The only cookie Let's Learn Hungarian sets is the one that keeps you signed in after you log in. It is strictly necessary for the account to work, contains a session token and nothing else, and is not used for tracking, so no consent banner is required for it. There are no advertising cookies.
The site uses Vercel Web Analytics to see aggregate visit counts and popular pages. It is cookieless — it does not store anything in your browser, does not use a persistent identifier, and cannot be used to identify you or track you across other sites.
Your choices and rights
From your account page you can change your display name, turn the marketing email on or off, sign out, and delete your account. Deleting the account permanently removes your login and all of your learning data from the database.
Depending on where you live you also have rights to access, correct, export, or restrict the processing of your data, and to withdraw consent. To exercise any of these, or if you have a privacy question, use the contact form.
How long we keep it
Account and learning data are kept while your account exists. If you delete your account it is removed immediately. Michael Soucek may also delete accounts that have been inactive for a long period, after notice to the email on file.
Children
You must be at least 16 years old to create an account, which you confirm at sign-up. Let's Learn Hungarian does not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under that age. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the page will be updated and the “last updated” date above changed. Material changes affecting existing accounts will be notified by email.
