Frequently asked questions
Do I need to live in Hungary to apply, or afterward?
No. Unlike ordinary naturalization, the ancestry and marriage routes carry no residence requirement (Act LV of 1993, § 4(3)–(3a)), and nothing in the Act requires you to move to Hungary after becoming a citizen.
Is there an application fee?
No. Naturalization and re-naturalization procedures are listed as free of charge in Annex 2 (point XIII.20) of Act XCIII of 1990 on Duties. You may still pay for certified translations, legalization, and getting records from abroad.
Is there a published list of interview questions?
No. There is no separate exam and no official question list. The official who receives your application checks your Hungarian in conversation and certifies the result on the form.
Can I lose my citizenship after I get it?
Only in limited cases. The Act allows revocation if citizenship was obtained by breaking the law — for example by giving false information or concealing facts — and not more than 20 years after it was acquired (§ 9(1)). Your Hungarian can be checked at any stage of the procedure before then.
What if my ancestor's records were destroyed or never existed?
The official guidance also accepts church and archival certificates (citing volume, page, and entry), and an ancestor's military book, employment record, or school certificate. The law's "plausible Hungarian origin" wording may help where records are thin, but how much it allows is not spelled out, so treat it as a fallback.
