The oath and after (add-on)

Informational only — not legal advice, and not affiliated with the Hungarian government. Rules and processing details change; confirm specifics with your consulate before you act on them.

Approval isn’t the finish line — the oath is

Once your application is approved, the President of Hungary issues a naturalization certificate (honosítási okirat). That doesn’t make you a citizen by itself: you become a Hungarian citizen on the day you take the citizenship oath or pledge (eskü or fogadalom — the two are equivalent). [Act LV of 1993, § 7(2), (5)] You choose the place on your application form: any Hungarian municipality or a Hungarian embassy or consulate abroad (for Budapest, you also give the district). [official information sheet, section 2]

There’s a real deadline: if, through your own fault, you don’t take the oath within one year of receiving the first invitation, the naturalization decision lapses and you would have to apply again. [§ 16(10)] A legal guardian takes the oath on behalf of someone who lacks legal capacity. [§ 7(1)]
