3. The application
Informational only — not legal advice, and not affiliated with the Hungarian government. Rules and processing details change; confirm specifics with your consulate before you act on them.
Where to file
You must file in person, by appointment — there is no mail-in option. [Embassy of Hungary] You can file at: [Act LV of 1993, § 13(1)]
- a Hungarian embassy or consulate, with a consular officer, if you live abroad;
- a district office of a Hungarian government office (járási / kerületi hivatal), or one of its integrated customer-service offices, if you’re in Hungary.
Consulates take bookings through the Foreign Ministry’s appointment system. [Embassy of Hungary] Wherever you file, the case is decided centrally: the Budapest Government Office’s Simplified Naturalization Department handles it, and the President of Hungary makes the final decision. [§ 6(1)]
