Lesson 56 of 74 · A2, Unit 2: Grammar toolkit
Under, above, beside, behind, in front of
Unlike the case suffixes you've learned, these five words for 'under/above/beside/behind/in front of' stay separate from the noun, which keeps its plain form: az asztal alatt ('under the table') — asztal doesn't change at all.
Like the family words from possessives, these postpositions take a set of personal endings when there's no noun to attach to: alattam ('under me'), melletted ('next to you'), mögötte ('behind him/her') — same six-person pattern you already know.
By the end you can:
- place things using alatt (under), fölött (above), mellett (beside), mögött (behind), and előtt (in front of)
- attach possessive-style endings to say 'next to me/you/him': mellettem, melletted...
- recognise the motion counterparts (mellé, mögé, elé, alá) as a preview
