Lesson 37 of 74 · A1, Unit 2: Basic structures
This, that, and plurals
ez ('this') and az ('that') are the two demonstratives; ezek and azok are simply their plurals. Both agree with the noun in number, not gender — Hungarian has no grammatical gender at all.
The plural of any noun is just -k, with a linking vowel added when the noun ends in a consonant: ház ('house') → házak, könyv ('book') → könyvek. A final -a or -e lengthens to -á/-é first: kutya ('dog') → kutyák.
By the end you can:
- point things out with ez/az and their plurals ezek/azok
- form the plural of a noun with -k and the right linking vowel
- combine plurals with the possessive endings you already know
