Lesson 63 of 74 · B1, Unit 3: Advanced grammar
Impersonal statements and the missing passive
Hungarian has essentially no everyday passive voice. Where English says 'Hungarian is spoken here', Hungarian just uses the plain 3rd person plural with no stated subject: Itt magyarul beszélnek — literally 'here they speak Hungarian', but understood as a general, agentless statement.
For a generic 'one' or 'you' (as in 'one never knows'), Hungarian uses az ember ('the person') as a stand-in subject: Az ember sosem tudja, mi történik ('One never knows what happens').
By the end you can:
- express passive-like ideas using the impersonal 3rd person plural
- use az ember for a generic 'one/you/people in general'
- recognise, without needing to produce, the rare formal -tatik/-tetik passive
