Lesson 5 of 74 · A1, Unit 3: Every day
People and family
Hungarian family words are precise about age and side in ways English is not. There are separate words for an older versus a younger brother, and an older versus a younger sister.
In real speech these relative words almost always carry a possessive ending: anya becomes anyám ('my mother'), báty becomes bátyám ('my older brother').
By the end you can:
- name family members, including the age- and side-specific words
- recognise the possessive endings on kinship terms (anyám, bátyám)
- say how many siblings or children you have
