Lesson 24 of 74 · A2, Unit 5: Grammar milestones
My, your, his: possessives
Hungarian doesn't use separate words for 'my', 'your', 'his' — it adds an ending to the noun instead: ház ('house') → házam ('my house'). You've already met -m, -d, and -unk/-ünk; this lesson puts the whole set together.
The endings follow vowel harmony like everything else: -am/-em/-öm for 'my' after a consonant, -m alone after a vowel — kert → kertem, but autó → autóm.
By the end you can:
- attach 'my', 'your', 'his/her', 'our', 'your (pl.)', and 'their' to a noun
- recognise the vowel-harmony pattern across the six persons
- ask 'whose is this?' and answer it
