Lesson 25 of 74 · A2, Unit 5: Grammar milestones
The past tense
The regular pattern adds -t (after a vowel) or -ott/-ett/-ött (after most consonants) to the verb stem, then the usual personal endings: dolgozik → dolgoztam ('I worked'), tanul → tanultam ('I learned').
A few everyday verbs are irregular and worth learning as whole words: van → volt ('was'), megy → ment ('went'), jön → jött ('came'), eszik → ettem ('I ate'), iszik → ittam ('I drank').
By the end you can:
- form the regular past tense: -t/-tt plus personal endings
- use the key irregular pasts: volt, ment, jött, ettem, ittam
- talk about yesterday, last week, and last year
