Lesson 69 of 74 · A2, Unit 2: Grammar toolkit
To me, with you, about him: pronouns with endings
Hungarian doesn't say 'with me' as two words. It takes the case ending (-val/-vel 'with') and adds a personal ending to it: velem ('with me'), veled ('with you'), vele ('with him/her'). The same trick works for nearly every case: nekem ('to me'), nálam ('at my place'), rólad ('about you').
The pattern is regular once you see it — ending + person — and these little words are everywhere in conversation: Nekem tetszik ('I like it'), Gyere velem! ('Come with me!').
By the end you can:
- say 'to/for me', 'with you', 'at our place', 'from you', 'about him'
- build the six persons of a case-pronoun from its ending
- use the common fixed phrases Mi van veled? and Bízom benned
