Lesson 33 of 74 · B1, Unit 2: Real conversations
Reported speech and hogy-clauses
hogy is Hungarian's all-purpose 'that', hooking a full sentence onto a verb of saying, thinking, or feeling: Azt mondta, hogy fáradt. ('He said that he was tired.') The clause after hogy is just a normal sentence.
Many verbs point forward to their hogy-clause with azt ('that thing', the accusative of az): Azt hiszem, hogy... , Azt mondta, hogy... — azt is doing the same job English 'that' does in 'I think that...'.
By the end you can:
- introduce a subordinate clause with hogy ('that')
- report what someone said, thinks, hopes, or is afraid of
- recognise -e attached to a verb for a reported yes/no question ('whether')
