Lesson 62 of 74 · B1, Unit 3: Advanced grammar
More verb prefixes for narrative
Beyond ki-/be-/fel-/le- from the last verb-prefix lesson, two more cover most of what's left: át- ('across/through': átmegy 'cross') and vissza- ('back': visszamegy 'go back'). The pattern is identical — glue the prefix onto the plain verb.
Narration leans on prefixed verbs heavily, because each one marks a step as done before the next starts: Megérkeztem, kicsomagoltam, aztán lefeküdtem ('I arrived, unpacked, then went to bed') — three completed steps, three meg-/ki-/le- verbs.
By the end you can:
- use át- (across) and vissza- (back), beyond the six basics
- recognise meg- marking completion even on verbs with no separate directional meaning: megérkezik
- chain several prefixed verbs to narrate a sequence
